New poem: "The Sands of Lost Time"

The Sands of Lost Time

I saw an elephant graveyard yesterday

morning on social media. Well, not really;

but real enough for me, being the poet

that I am who sees beyond the mundane

images of life into a whole new symbolic

reality of meaning. Retired men and women

laying lifeless in the cooling shade of big

umbrellas on a Florida beach waiting for

the happy hour and evening meal, passing

the tedious days away as their aging bodies

allow them; not unlike elephants who sense

their death is near, so legend has it, migrate

to that mythical place where the tusks

and bones of their ancestors lay

in the sands of lost time.
