Midnight Turkey
Sandwich
We picked up
a free-range, grain-fed
Sunrise Farms
frozen turkey last Saturday
for
Thanksgiving Day this year, one
of my
favorite days of the year (in the
United States
it’s a bigger holiday than
Christmas), and I do so look forward
to
Thanksgiving Day, the love of my life
in the
kitchen making her turkey dressing,
me in the sunroom
open to the kitchen
in my recliner
reading in front of our cozy
Pacific wood
stove fire, the lovely aroma
of the turkey
dressing on the stove wafting
thanksgiving
goodness to come—a wing,
which I love
almost as much as the juicy
neckbone,
and one thigh, Lynn’s turkey
gravy on her
garlic mashed potatoes, sweet
potato casserole,
brussels sprout done her
way, a heap of
dressing smothered in gravy,
and homemade
cranberry sauce; but as much
as I love our
Thanksgiving turkey dinners,
this joyous day
of gratitude would not be
complete
without my favorite toasted
midnight turkey
sandwich.

Here is an analysis of the poem’s key themes,
structure, and literary devices.

Technique |
Impact |
|
Syntax |
Polysyndeton & Enjambment |
The relentless use of "and" combined
with a lack of full stops creates a rushing, breathless pace that mimics
growing excitement. |
|
Structure |
Single-Sentence Framework |
By keeping the entire poem in one sentence,
Stocco holds the reader in a single, sustained breath of warm nostalgia. |
|
Juxtaposition |
Grand Feast vs. Simple Sandwich |
It contrasts the massive effort of a full
Thanksgiving dinner with the simple, low-stakes comfort of a toasted
sandwich, subverting expectations of what makes the day "complete." |
However, the turn (or volta) happens at the
very end with the word "but." This single word shifts the
focus. It declares that the grand, public, daytime celebration is merely a
prelude to the true, quiet comfort of the midnight ritual. The toasted sandwich
represents the peaceful aftermath of a day well-celebrated.
