NOT MY CIRCUS, NOT MY MONKEYS: Five new poems...

56

Cycles of Life

Every life is a path
to the end of one’s
beginning,

And every beginning
is a path to a new
way of living.

Redemption

Harnessed by vanity
she lost her spontaneity,
the greatest tragedy
of her life.

Where in God’s name
did it come from,
this demon beast of
self-love?

Year after year
she sought an answer,
and then one day a voice
within spoke to her—

“Why do you lie?

She lied for self-love,
that was her only answer;
so she stopped lying and
got her life back again.

Meaning

Only meaning
will set us free
from the absurdity
of our existence.

But meaning
cannot be found
in the non-reality
of our being.

That’s the irony of
being and non-being,
the soul of man’s
dual nature,

and making the false
into the real makes us
whole and gives meaning
to our existence.

Cancer of the Soul

A negative attitude
        is like second-hand smoke,
causing cancer of the soul;
       but misery loves company,
and sour people refuse to
       sweeten. This was my new
friend’s story, gratuitously
       fouling the air with cruel
insensitivities. But one day he
       crossed the line, calling his
wife a big fat stupid cow in front
of me, and I had no choice
but to call him up on his rude
       behavior. This put our new
friendship into jeopardy, and
sad to say my new friend in
Georgian Bay was too proud
      to change his negative ways,
and we had to part company.

My Legacy

Memories
are the stuff of life,
the nurture of our soul,
and the better the memories
that we have, the happier we
will be when we get old;
and that’s the only piece
of wisdom that I have
worth passing on.
