NEW POEM: "An Island in the Middle of Manhattan"

An Island in the Middle of Manhattan

A longing in her soul compelled her,
walking away from an unhappy marriage,
a solid career writing for another, and all
the security she had worked so hard for,
to look for the woman she wanted to be,
travelling the world to taste the fruits
of every tree, and praying to God for
happiness; and when she found the love
of her life she shared her story with the
world, and all the fame and adulation fed
her great desire to write and read and
garden and love the new man in her life,
and she was delirious in her quest for the
signature of all things. She had it all, wealth,
fame, and all the freedom to satisfy her longing
to be the woman she dreamt of becoming,
delirious, delirious in her happiness which
she shared with the world once more; but
in her quest for her soul’s DNA, she chanced
upon a fruit like no other and dared not taste
it for fear of censure, but the temptation
was too great and her heart got what her
heart wanted and all her wisdom could not
save her from the woman she had become,
and she walked away from the perfect life
and now languishes in the arms of her
dying lover on the fabled island in
the middle of Manhattan.
